Concrete Slabs in Villa Rica, GA

Concrete Slabs · Villa Rica, GA

The Slab Under Your Home, Garage, Shop or Barn

Pro One Concrete pours concrete slabs for homes and businesses across west metro Atlanta. That covers house slabs for new homes and additions, garage slabs, shop slabs and pole barn slabs. We also pour concrete pads for large sheds and equipment. Slabs are one part of our work as a concrete contractor serving Villa Rica and the towns nearby.

A concrete slab is only as good as the ground under it. Around Villa Rica, much of that ground is red clay under the topsoil. So the site work matters as much as the pour, and grading is part of our slab work. We look at the job and put the quote in writing.

House Slabs and Garage Slabs

A house slab is the ground floor of a slab-on-grade home. Drain lines under the floor go in before the pour, and the plumber sets them. Under a heated house slab, Georgia's residential code calls for a vapor retarder. It slows ground moisture coming up through the floor.

A garage slab carries the cars and trucks parked on it every day. Unheated garages are exempt from that vapor retarder rule, and so are carports. Most new garages also need a drive up to the door, and we pour concrete driveways too.

Some house plans put the home over a crawl space instead of on a slab. In that case we build the block foundation the house sits on.

Pole Barn Slabs and Concrete Pads

A pole barn slab or a shop slab is the floor of a working building. It carries trucks and tractors, plus whatever gets stored inside. We pour these slabs at full size, such as the floor of a 30 by 40 pole barn.

Some slabs get mesh or rebar. The state code calls for that steel to sit in the center to upper third of the slab. Steel lying on the dirt under the concrete does not meet that rule. The ready-mix industry's guidance says mesh does not prevent cracking, but it helps keep cracks from opening up.

For a large shed or a carport, we pour a concrete pad sized to the footprint. Slabs and pads for a business fall under our commercial concrete work.

What Does a Concrete Slab Need Around Villa Rica?

The ground comes first. Georgia's residential code calls for topsoil and plant growth to come out from under a slab. Any fill has to be compacted so the slab bears evenly. The code caps fill depth at 8 inches of earth or 24 inches of clean sand or gravel, unless approved.

Red clay washes out fast once a site is cleared, so water needs a path away from the slab. The state code calls for at least 6 inches of fall in the first 10 feet from a home.

Weather matters on pour day too. In summer heat, concrete sets faster, and industry guidance is to avoid the hottest part of the day. In winter, fresh concrete has to be kept from freezing for about two days after the pour.

FAQ

Concrete Slabs Questions, Answered

Common questions about concrete slabs around Villa Rica and the west side of metro Atlanta. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (770) 880-4224

How much does a concrete slab cost?
The size and thickness of the slab drive most of the price. The site matters too, such as how much grading it needs and how close the concrete truck can get. We look at the job and put the quote in writing. Call or text (770) 880-4224 to set that up.
How thick should a garage slab be?
Georgia's residential code sets 3.5 inches as the minimum for a slab floor. A garage or shop that holds heavy trucks or equipment may call for more. Tell us what the slab will carry, and we figure that into the written quote.
Will a new concrete slab crack?
Concrete shrinks as it dries, and the ready-mix industry's guidance says cracks cannot be prevented entirely. Control joints are planned weak lines, so the slab cracks there instead of at random. That guidance spaces them about 10 feet apart on a 4-inch slab, and no more than 15 feet. Saw-cut joints go in within 4 to 12 hours after finishing.
How long does a new concrete slab need to cure?
Curing keeps new concrete moist and warm enough to gain strength. Industry guidance says curing starts right after finishing and runs 3 to 7 days. Concrete left to dry out can lose as much as half its potential strength.
Do I need a permit for a concrete slab?
In Georgia, each city or county decides which concrete work needs a permit. The permit office for the property answers that question, and we point you there before the job starts. Separate from permits, Georgia law requires a locate request through Georgia 811 before digging starts. Georgia 811 asks for that ticket at least 3 business days ahead.
What should I ask concrete slab contractors before I hire one?
Ask what goes under the slab and how water will drain away from it. If the slab gets steel, ask how it stays up in the concrete during the pour. Ask where the control joints go, and get the quote in writing.
